The third eye is usually defined as the gateway to higher consciousness, but it is not as straightforward as that.

Have you ever dreamt of something, and then it came true? Or have you ever felt ill-at-ease and then suddenly bad things happen? That's probably your third eye telling you.

The capability itself is trainable, but first, one needs to know what the third eye is. To many Indonesians, a third eye is often associated with the ability to see ghosts and other supernatural things. However, the concept has an alternative explanation and is not as "magical" as many think.

Throughout history, the eastern world linked the third eye to enlightenment or the inner eye. It is related to clairvoyance, visions, and out-of-body experiences.

Many meditating practitioners close their eyes and focus on their third eye. By doing so, it is believed that they are sending signals to the highest part of themselves — allowing them to see what can't be seen, touched, or experienced. Men and women who have worked on developing the skills are known as "seers".

More about the third eye

The third eye is believed by some to be linked to the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland that's shaped like a pine cone and is located in the middle of the brain. There is still no scientific evidence that the third eye exists, but spiritually, many have experienced it.

The pineal gland, coming from a health perspective, produces melatonin. It is a hormone that affects sleep patterns and seasonal functions. It also controls the body's bio-rhythms and works in harmony with the hypothalamus gland, which manages the body's sexual desire, hunger, thirst, and biological clock.

Clairvoyance may be one outcome of a developed third eye. However, it is not simply just about predicting the future. Spiritual practitioners believe that when a third eye is opened, they become more aware of the bigger picture of what is going around them, including feeling the presence of other living spiritual things around them.

A third eye is not as simple as seeing ghosts and helping with the exorcism, but it is about having the chakra that even professional practitioners have to practice every day. Long story short, having a third eye suggests that the body becomes "more aware" than ordinary people. People with a third eye are closer to nature and can detect illness and why it develops.

Here's how it's related — each chakra is associated with one physical structure in the body. Gurus of the chakra (who usually possess a "strong" third eye themselves) know that every illness can be traced through the corresponding chakra.

The physical structure closely related to the third eye chakra is the pituitary gland. Headaches, hormone imbalances, nightmares, indecision, burnout, and lack of purpose are all common manifestations when there's an imbalance in the third eye.
