Seven rounds. Fifteen minutes on the clock, plus five seconds a move. One chair, one board, and an 11-year-old from North Sulawesi who didn't blink.

That's how Veronica Jefany Sheryl Kichi Makalew spent her first day at the 2026 Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship (EAYCC) in Hainan, China  and by the end of it, she had Indonesia's first gold medal of the tournament.

Who is Veronica Makalew?

Veronica Makalew is a young Indonesian chess player from Tomohon, North Sulawesi, competing in the Girls U12 category. She's not new to this  she's played international events since she was seven, including the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Bali and Malaysia's IGB Chess Festival, where she already picked up podium finishes. EAYCC 2026 in Hainan is her biggest stage yet, and her first Rapid gold at this level.

What did she win at EAYCC 2026?

Makalew won the gold medal in the Girls U12 Rapid category on the tournament's opening day, finishing with 6 out of a possible 7 points across five wins and two draws. The Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship is run under the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE, drawing players from across East Asia, including strong host-nation competition from China. Beating that depth of field on day one is not a small thing  it's the kind of result that gets noticed by national federations, not just local fan pages.

How competitive was the field?

Very. China alone entered multiple players per age category, and the tournament runs across six age brackets  U8 through U18  in both open and girls' divisions. Silver in Makalew's own event went to a player from Mongolia, and Indonesian teammates picked up medals in other categories too, including a silver from Cherisha Divina Wijaya. Rapid chess, with its 15+5 clock, punishes hesitation there's no room to sit and think for ten minutes on a single move.

Why does this matter for Indonesian chess?

Because it's not a one-off. Indonesia's junior players won seven medals at the same tournament in 2025, and Makalew has been stacking results since 2022. What's happening isn't a single prodigy  it's a pipeline of young Indonesian players getting international match experience early, and starting to beat the region's traditional powerhouses at their own game.

The tournament runs through August 30, and Makalew still has more categories to play. For a country better known internationally for badminton and football, an 11-year-old quietly building a chess résumé from Tomohon is the kind of story that deserves more than an Instagram caption.
