Merah Sebelum Fajar by Garin Nugroho premiered at TIFF 2026 and competes for six awards. See the cast, outfits, and Indonesian release date.
Four actors, one director, and a rainy red carpet. Here is what happened when Indonesian cinema walked into Tokyo
It was raining on the red carpet in Tokyo on 26 October 2026, so the guests stood under clear umbrellas. Beneath them stood a director in a black jacket and four actors in Indonesian designs. They came for Merah Sebelum Fajar (Red Before Dawn), one of 15 films in the Main Competition at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF).
The big surprise is the order of events. Tokyo sees the film first. Indonesian audiences have to wait almost three months.

What Is Merah Sebelum Fajar?
Merah Sebelum Fajar is a new Indonesian film directed by Garin Nugroho. It stars Nicholas Saputra, Laura Basuki, Nagra Pakusadewo, and Tissa Biani. It had its world premiere on 27 October 2026 at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival in Tokyo, Japan. The film competes against 14 others for six awards. It opens in Indonesian cinemas on 21 January 2027. Ticket prices have not been announced yet.
What Is Merah Sebelum Fajar Competing For?
The film is in the Main Competition, the festival’s top section. Six awards are on offer, including the Tokyo Grand Prix and Best Director.
Garin Nugroho carries the film’s hopes on his shoulders. He stood on the red carpet in a dark jacket and glasses, smiling, while rain tapped on the umbrellas around him.
What Did the Cast Wear on the Tokyo Red Carpet?
The cast chose Indonesian designers, and each look was easy to spot. Nicholas Saputra wore a dark, high-collar suit by Kraton, designed by Auguste Soesastro. Laura Basuki wore a soft, see-through white cape-style gown by Stellarissa, with styling direction from Hagai Pakan.
Tissa Biani wore a pale gold custom gown by Yosafat Dwi K. Her shoes were by Nefrin Fadlan, her fascinator was from Hummingbird Road, and her jewelry was by Tulola. Nagra Pakusadewo went another way, pairing a black three-piece suit with a traditional Javanese headcloth.
Why Does This Premiere Matter?
Premiering abroad first is a big move for any film. Indonesian cinema has a long history at international festivals, and Garin Nugroho is one of its best-known directors. This time, the film shows up in a competition of 15, in front of an international audience, before its home crowd sees a single frame.
There is also a quiet fashion story. Five Indonesian designers and brands were on that wet carpet in Tokyo. For a young, style-aware reader, it was a film promotion and a runway at the same time.
What Happens Next?
The winners will be announced at the festival’s closing. Until then, the film waits for its verdict. For Indonesian fans, the real date to remember is 21 January 2027, when Merah Sebelum Fajar finally reaches local cinemas.
