TABEBUYA FLOWERS ARE BLOOMING ALL OVER JAKARTA RIGHT NOW
Tabebuya trees are blooming across Jakarta this August. See where the bloom is thickest, why it happens now, and how long it will last.
At a glance
- 4,000–5,000 tabebuya trees are now planted across Jakarta's five administrative regions
- Peak bloom lasts just 1 to 2 weeks before the petals drop
- Flowering season runs August through October every year
- Right now, the thickest blooms are along Jl. Salemba (Jakarta Pusat), Kemang (Jakarta Selatan), and around Jakarta International Stadium (Jakarta Utara)
Tabebuya, a flowering tree native to Brazil and known formally as Handroanthus chrysotrichus, is blooming across Jakarta this week in clusters of pink, white, and soft yellow. The Jakarta Parks and Urban Forestry Agency (Dinas Pertamanan dan Hutan Kota, or Distamhut DKI Jakarta) confirms the bloom is city-wide right now, with the thickest displays along Jl. Salemba in Jakarta Pusat, Jl. Kemang Raya in Jakarta Selatan, and the pedestrian corridor around Jakarta International Stadium in Jakarta Utara. Around 4,000 to 5,000 tabebuya trees are planted across the city's five administrative areas, and the flowering usually holds from August into October, though any single tree's peak bloom fades within one to two weeks.
Here's the part that surprises people: this isn't a spring flower. Tabebuya blooms hardest when Jakarta is at its hottest and driest.
"The trigger is water stress hot, dry weather forces the buds to open all at once," said Fajar Sauri, head of Distamhut DKI Jakarta, explaining why the trees flower during the dry season rather than after rain.
That means the same heat that makes Jakarta traffic miserable is what's painting Sudirman-Thamrin, Salemba, and Kemang pink this week. Stand under one of these trees around 7 a.m. and you'll catch petals drifting down onto the sidewalk, scooters, and parked cars a soft, almost silent scatter that looks nothing like the concrete underneath it.

Where Can You See Tabebuya Flowers in Jakarta Right Now?
The three most photographed clusters this week are Jl. Salemba heading toward Jl. Kramat in Jakarta Pusat, the stretch of Jl. Kemang Raya in Jakarta Selatan near the neighborhood's food courts, and the walkway ringing Jakarta International Stadium in Jakarta Utara. Smaller clusters are also flowering along Jl. Danau Sunter Barat in Jakarta Utara and the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor, where the trees were among the first planted back in 2023.
Why Do Tabebuya Trees Bloom During Jakarta's Dry Season?
Unlike Japan's cherry blossoms, which respond to warming temperatures after a cold winter, tabebuya responds to drought stress. Weeks without rain push the tree to flower quickly and heavily, almost as a survival signal, before dropping its petals and growing leaves again once the rain returns.
How Long Will This Bloom Last?
Not long. Distamhut DKI Jakarta says peak flowering typically holds for just one to two weeks per tree before the canopy thins out and petals carpet the ground. Residents who spotted the flowers over the past few weeks along Jl. Kramat already describe some trees starting to shed.
The planting itself isn't just for the photos. City officials say the expansion is part of a broader push to grow Jakarta's green open space and cut down on air pollution, with more trees planned for medians, bus stops, train stations, and public facilities across the city.
