Flying can be an exciting experience, but what you wear on a plane can make a big difference in your comfort level and overall experience. While most airlines do not have a formal dress code, there are some widely accepted guidelines for what to wear on a plane. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a more comfortable and pleasant flight, while avoiding the risk of being kicked off your flight.

Before you pack for your next flight, read through this guide of what not to wear on a plane.

Open-toed Shoes

Although sandals may seem like a great option for a warm-weather destination, it's best to avoid wearing them on a plane. The carpets and floors of planes are not always cleaned thoroughly, so wearing shoes is recommended. You should also wear shoes when using the airplane bathroom to avoid coming into contact with any potential germs.

“Offensive” Clothing

Most airlines reserve the right to refuse boarding to passengers wearing offensive clothing. This typically refers to clothing with profanity or inappropriate images. If your clothing is deemed offensive, you may be asked to change, and if you refuse, you could be kicked off your flight.

Pajamas

While it's great to be comfortable on a flight, it's best to avoid wearing pajamas to the airport or on the plane. Instead, opt for comfortable, loose-fitting pants with an elastic waistband. You can find options that are just as comfortable as pajamas, such as Athleta's Balance Pants. If you are flying business class and are given pajamas for your flight, it is acceptable to wear them on the plane, but be sure to change before landing.

Swimwear

Most airlines do not have a dress code, but Hawaiian Airlines does publish one, and it specifically bans wearing swimming attire on flights. While this shouldn't be a problem since planes don't have swimming pools, if you feel the need to wear your bathing suit on a flight, make sure to wear a cover-up.

A Single Layer

It's difficult to predict the temperature on a plane, so it's best to be prepared for all scenarios. Wearing a single layer, whether it's a tank top or a thick sweater, is not recommended. Instead, wear layers so you can adjust accordingly.

Bulky Metal Jewelry

While accessories may be fun for a night out, they can be a hassle while traveling. Bulky metal jewelry will need to be removed during airport security checks, so it's best to pack it in your carry-on.

Fragrance

Be mindful of your fellow passengers who may have sensitivities to certain fragrances. Avoid wearing anything too strong, as scents can spread quickly in an enclosed space like an airplane cabin.

It is essential to consider what you wear on a plane. It can make a difference in your comfort and experience, as well as the experience of those around you. Keep these guidelines in mind for your next flight, and enjoy your journey!
