PUTRI MARINO WINS BEST PERFORMANCE AT SGIFF 2026 FOR EMPAT MUSIM PERTIWI
Putri Marino wins Best Performance at SGIFF 2026 for Empat Musim Pertiwi. Here is what the film is about and how far it has travelled.
At a glance
- 1 shared prize: Best Performance, Asian Feature Film category
- 20 years: how long Pertiwi spent in prison in the story
- 8 countries co-produced the film
Before cameras rolled on Empat Musim Pertiwi, Putri Marino did something few actors dare to do. She said no to every other film offer. This week, that bet paid off in Singapore, where Putri Marino won Best Performance at SGIFF 2026.

What is Putri Marino’s Best Performance win at SGIFF 2026?
Indonesian actress Putri Marino won Best Performance in the Asian Feature Film category at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) 2026, announced in early November 2026. She won for playing the title character in Empat Musim Pertiwi (Four Seasons in Java), directed by Kamila Andini. She shares the award with Pushpa Thing Lama, who stars in Elephants in the Fog. The film is a co-production of eight countries and has been in Indonesian cinemas since 8 October 2026.
What is Empat Musim Pertiwi about?
Pertiwi returns to her home village after 20 years in prison. Nobody is waiting with open arms. The film follows her as she faces trauma, stigma, and the people who still live freely after hurting her.
Kamila Andini calls it a suspense drama, but it also mixes in fantasy and supernatural touches. It is set around Mount Bromo, with East Javanese dialogue and Reog Ponorogo, a traditional dance of drums and giant masks, woven into the story. You can almost feel the cold, dry air of the highlands through the screen.
Why did Putri Marino turn down other films?
Because Pertiwi needed all of her. After the trailer launch on 8 September 2026, Putri told reporters she chose to stay away from other work while preparing for the role.
That is a real risk for an actor. A year without other credits is a long time in a fast-moving industry. The SGIFF prize suggests it was the right call.
How far has the film travelled?
The journey has been fast. Empat Musim Pertiwi had its world premiere on 13 September at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It then played at the Busan International Film Festival, and later at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
On 14 September, the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee picked it as Indonesia’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. The ceremony is scheduled for 14 March 2027 in Los Angeles.
Here is the part many people miss. Being selected is not the same as being nominated. The film still has to make the Academy’s shortlist, then the final five. That is a long road, but a prize like this one helps its case.
Kamila Andini has been here before. Her film Yuni won the Platform Prize at TIFF in 2021 and was also Indonesia’s Oscar entry. Producer Ifa Isfansyah of Forka Films is again behind the project.
Should you watch it in cinemas?
Yes, if you can. The film is still playing in Indonesian cinemas, and a story built on mountain landscapes and quiet faces works best on a big screen. Going now also helps the film, since Indonesian box office numbers are part of the buzz heading into awards season.
The film does deal with heavy themes, so go in expecting a thoughtful drama, not a light night out.
