Three days in, and Indonesia's Asian Games medal count reads like a plot twist: seven medals, zero gold, and a 13th place ranking that somehow still beats Malaysia by ten spots.
At the closing ceremony broadcast, five athletes' faces flashed across the screen in quick succession a wushu fighter, a teqball player, two karate competitors, an MMA fighter. Different sports, same red-and-white jersey, same story: Indonesia is scrapping for medals in disciplines most casual fans couldn't name a year ago.

Who's Actually Winning These Medals?
The silver Indonesia's only one so far came from Sumaya in women's singles teqball, a hybrid of soccer and volleyball played on a curved table that most Indonesians have never heard of, let alone watched.
The bronzes are scattered across five disciplines. Seraf Naro Siregar took wushu changquan bronze in the men's event, while Eugenia Diva Widodo matched it on the women's side, scoring 9.706 points to finish third. Yoga Ardika Putra added a bronze in men's teqball. The men's soft tennis team a sport with barely six months of concentrated training behind this squad medaled too. Karate contributed through Leica Al Humaira Lubis in the women's +68kg kumite category, and MMA added its first-ever Indonesian medal via Vallensia Fahira Hotmauli in the women's -54kg division.
That last one is the detail worth sharing: this is Indonesia's first Asian Games medal in mixed martial arts, a sport that only entered the Games program recently.
"Persiapan kami cuma enam bulan, tapi hasilnya nggak mengkhianati usaha," one member of the soft tennis team said after their bronze-medal win over Japan a six-month sprint that paid off against the host nation.
How Does Indonesia's Ranking Compare in Southeast Asia?
Indonesia isn't the top ASEAN performer at these Games that title belongs to Thailand, sitting in the top five with three gold medals, followed by Myanmar in 9th with one gold, one silver, and one bronze. But Indonesia has pulled ahead of regional rival Malaysia, which sits 23rd with only two bronze medals.
At the top of the overall table, China leads decisively with 38 total medals (23 gold), followed by host nation Japan with 32, and South Korea with 23.
Why Hasn't Indonesia Won Gold Yet?
With competition still running in dozens of sports, the picture will keep shifting daily. Indonesia's medal-heavy sports badminton, weightlifting, athletics largely have their finals scheduled for later in the Games, so a gold-less start isn't unusual this early in the schedule.
