Indonesia won the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, the first edition of an official FIFA tournament for Southeast Asian teams. They beat Thailand 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on 5 October 2026. It is Indonesia's first senior regional title in about 30 years. How did Indonesia reach the final?
Indonesia topped Group A with seven points. They beat Singapore 2-0, drew 0-0 with Malaysia, then thrashed Bangladesh 9-2 on 1 October. Teenage striker Mitchell Baker scored five goals in that last game.
Here is the part most people missed. Malaysia also finished on seven points with a +9 goal difference after beating Singapore 6-0. Indonesia went through only because they scored 11 goals to Malaysia's nine. One goal decided who played the final and who played for third place.
How did Indonesia beat Thailand in the final?
Thailand found the net twice. Indonesia answered both times, and the match ended 2-2 after extra time. Then came penalties, and Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott and Shayne Pattynama all scored for Indonesia.
Thailand had won Group B and beaten Vietnam 2-0 along the way, so this was no easy opponent. The two teams had also met in the 2020 AFF Cup final, played in December 2021 and January 2022. Thailand won that one 4-0 in the first leg and drew 2-2 in the second. This time the result flipped.
