It’s not every day that a tech-savvy European nation shows up at your doorstep with an open invitation to do business—digitally, seamlessly, and globally. But that’s exactly what happened this week in Jakarta.

Estonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna, made an official visit to Indonesia and was welcomed in style during a special reception hosted on Tuesday night by Priit Turk, Estonia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Singapore, and ASEAN. The reception, held in Jakarta, brought together diplomatic figures, innovators, and business leaders from both nations, sparking vibrant conversations about what’s next for Estonia-Indonesia relations.

Among the Indonesian dignitaries present was Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno, who underscored the strong historical and economic ties between the two nations—and the even stronger potential ahead.

“The fact that our trade has grown 40% in just a year—hitting $540 million—says a lot,” said Indonesian diplomat Dino Patti Djalal, who also attended. “Estonia may be small, but it could be our bridge to Europe.”

And why not? Estonia has been making global headlines as the ultimate digital nation. According to Minister Tsahkna, the country has digitized nearly all public services (yes, everything but marriage), making government paperwork and bureaucracy virtually obsolete.

“Estonia is one of the best countries in the world when it comes to digital infrastructure,” Tsahkna told the audience. “Through our e-Residency program, anyone—from anywhere—can start and run a business in the EU, entirely online.”

For Indonesia’s young and ambitious—startup founders, freelancers, digital creators—this could be the open door to scale their dreams on an international stage.

But this wasn’t just a feel-good speech. Estonia came with a mission: to build practical, two-way partnerships. “We’re sending an Indonesian delegation to Estonia soon,” Tsahkna confirmed. “And our own delegation is here this week, seeking real investment and collaboration opportunities.”

One of those voices was Oliver Väärtnõu, Vice-Chair of Estonia’s Chamber of Commerce, who shared that several Estonian companies are already active in Indonesia, especially in Bali’s real estate scene. “We’re here to connect with the local digital ecosystem. Indonesia’s market is fast, agile, and filled with potential. We want to learn more—and do more.”

The message was clear: Estonia isn’t just here to talk. It’s here to partner, co-create, and digitally evolve with Indonesia’s next generation.

So, if you're a young professional with a startup itch or a bold idea that deserves more than just local recognition—Estonia might just be your launchpad.

The future of diplomacy is digital—and it might be calling your name.
