A GOLDEN CARRIAGE, EIGHT HORSES, AND ONE 17-YEAR-OLD: INSIDE INDONESIA'S 81ST INDEPENDENCE DAY

At a Glance

  • 81 mounted troops escorted the ceremony, one for every year of independence
  • 8 horses pulled the royal carriage  one for each letter, symbolically, of August
  • 38 provinces sent representatives to this year's national flag-raising squad
  • 45 police motorcycles opened the procession, marking the year 1945

Before sunrise on Monday, a wooden carriage built by craftsmen in Sleman, Yogyakarta, rolled out of Monas pulled by eight cream-colored horses. Crowds had already lined the route since before dawn. Inside sat a folded flag and a single sheet of paper: the original proclamation text that made Indonesia a country in 1945.

That's how Indonesia opened its 81st Independence Day  not with a speech, but with a parade.

The short version: On Monday, August 17, 2026, President Prabowo Subianto led the Upacara Peringatan Detik-Detik Proklamasi (the official Independence Day ceremony) at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta. The morning began with the Kirab Merah Putih, a procession carrying the national flag and proclamation text from Monas to the palace by horse-drawn carriage. The ceremony itself centered on Indonesia's national Paskibraka  the flag-hoisting honor guard  drawn from all 38 provinces and named "Indonesia Berdaulat" this year. Admission to watch was free, as it is every year.

What Happened During the Kirab Merah Putih?

The carriage is called Kereta Kencana Garuda Prabayaksa  "praba" meaning light, "yaksa" meaning great, so together, roughly "a great bright light." It was built for the 80th anniversary and reused this year. Two former Paskibraka members, Bianca Sultana Najwa of SMAN 82 Jakarta and Aliah Sakira of SMAN 14 Makassar, rode inside carrying the flag and the proclamation text respectively. Forty-five police motorcycles led the route  a nod to 1945  followed by 170 cadets from the Police Academy's drum corps.

Who Actually Raised the Flag?
Once the carriage reached Istana Merdeka, the job passed to this year's Paskibraka trio. I Nyoman Harya Dhanurendra Darmamukti, a student at SMAN 7 Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, hoisted the flag. M. Aryo Wira Zandhyka Y, from SMAN 7 in Bengkulu, stretched it open. And Celina Olivia Apriani Theo, a student at SMK Negeri 5 Pontianak in West Kalimantan, carried the tray  the role known as pembawa baki  after receiving the folded flag directly from President Prabowo Subianto.

"The one carrying the tray today is Celina Olivia, from SMK Negeri 5 Pontianak, representing West Kalimantan province, daughter of Mr. Intonius and Mrs. Anatasya," the ceremony announcer told the crowd as she stepped down from the podium.

Why Do the Numbers Matter So Much?
Here's the detail most people miss: almost nothing in the procession is random. Eight horses for the eighth month. Eighty-one mounted escorts for the 81st year. Forty-five motorcycles for 1945. Indonesia essentially writes its own founding date, 17-8-45, into the choreography of the parade itself  a code hiding in plain sight for anyone paying attention.

This year's theme, "Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur" (Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia), also gave its name to the national Paskibraka team, selected from 38 provinces after months of training and elimination.
