A university chess team from Depok just beat Oxford. Not a close match, not a lucky draw  a 7.5 to 0.5 blowout.

That's the scoreline Universitas Gunadarma put up against Oxford University at the FIDE World University Team Chess Championship 2026, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The win pushed Gunadarma into the tournament's quarterfinals, making them the only team from Southeast Asia to get that far.

Who played, and how the tournament works.

This was the first-ever edition of this FIDE championship, bringing together 16 universities from around the world. Every match was played across four boards simultaneously, with a rule built into the format: each squad had to field at least one female and one male player. Gunadarma's lineup for this run was IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan, IM Aditya Bagus Arfan, FM Fabian Glen Mariano, FM Zacky Dhia Ulhaq, and WIM Diajeng Theresa Singgih.

How did Gunadarma reach the quarterfinals?
The road there wasn't clean. Gunadarma opened the group stage with a loss to Kazakhstan National University of Sport, the host country's own team. Instead of folding, they answered with a 5.5–2.5 win over KazNU Al-Farabi, then delivered the Oxford result that got people talking: 7.5–0.5. That result made Gunadarma runner-up in Pool D, enough to punch their ticket into the knockout round.

Picture the scene at the venue: four boards lined up under stage lighting, digital clocks ticking down in silence except for the occasional click of a piece being placed. Players in matching grey blazers, lanyards around their necks, staring down opponents from universities most Indonesians have only seen in college-ranking headlines.

Gunadarma joined seven other schools in the final eight: Saint Louis University, Harvard University, Universidad de Chile, Ural State Mining University, University of Texas at Dallas, Kazakh National University of Sports, and National Technical University of Athens. In the quarterfinal, their run ended against University of Texas at Dallas  but reaching that stage at all, as the sole Southeast Asian representative, was the headline.

The team's title titles matter here too. Two International Masters, two FIDE Masters, and a Woman International Master isn't a group of casual club players  it's a squad with real competitive rating behind it, which is part of why the Oxford result landed as a genuine upset rather than a fluke.
