Art collectors and enthusiasts from across the region and beyond tuned in on October 23, 2024, to witness the much-anticipated live auction by Global Auction. Titled “Southeast Asian, Chinese, Modern & Contemporary Art,” this event showcased an impressive array of 148 art pieces, spotlighting both Indonesian and international talents. Hosted online with an in-person viewing opportunity leading up to the final day, the auction not only celebrated established masters but also offered fresh perspectives from modern and contemporary artists, attracting fervent interest and competitive bidding.

A Display of Indonesian Art Heritage

Among the notable works was Harijadi Sumadidjaja’s People and Taxes (Rakjat dan Padjak) from 1956. This thought-provoking piece captures Indonesia’s post-independence challenges, reflecting the struggles of civilians and officials amid new economic demands. The realistic brushwork and somber brown tones convey the weight of these societal issues, making it one of the most discussed pieces in the exhibition.

Another standout was Affandi’s The Maestro and Friend (S. Sudjojono), a vivid portrait of camaraderie between two giants of Indonesian art. Affandi’s expressive style, marked by his signature swirling strokes, captivated viewers and underscored the close connection between Affandi and Sudjojono, both pioneers in Indonesian modern art.

Hendra Gunawan’s Under the Sea brought a different flavor to the auction, presenting an imaginative underwater world. Dominated by deep blues with contrasting bursts of pink and red, this work demonstrates Gunawan’s ability to blend traditional Indonesian elements with modern techniques, capturing both the mystique and vibrancy of marine life.

Srihadi Soedarsono’s Bedoyo-Beauty of Soul was another key highlight. This graceful depiction of traditional Javanese dancers in their meditative poses, with soft white costumes against a deep black background, was lauded for its mastery in color composition and elegance. The painting’s timeless beauty and cultural significance resonated strongly, adding depth to the auction’s diverse artistic offerings.

Exploring Further and Engaging the Art Community

From the natural beauty of Affandi’s Water Lilies Pond in Tasikmalaya to Ahmad Sadali’s atmospheric Embers in the Sunset Sky, Global Auction's event offered something for every art lover. Contemporary and modern artworks complemented the traditional pieces, giving collectors a comprehensive view of the evolving landscape of Southeast Asian art.

Held at Global Auction’s gallery in Jakarta, the exhibition drew hundreds of in-person visitors before the auction's online finale. Interested collectors and art aficionados can find additional information on the pieces, as well as future auction dates, through Global Auction's official website.
